GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GAF-compatible ridge vent on Jacksonville roofs, with most residential installations running between $450 and $850 depending on linear footage, roof pitch, and how much of the old vent needs to come off. In most cases, we can get to a ridge vent replacement within a few days, and we carry the common 4-foot GAF Snow Country and Cobra sections on the truck. You’ll know the vent failed when you walk into the attic in August and it feels like a kiln, or when you spot shingle granules piling up in the gutter directly below the ridge line.
Most Jacksonville homeowners discover their ridge vent is done the same way: the upstairs rooms won’t hold temperature, the attic smells hot and stale, or a heavy storm left water stains creeping down from the ceiling near the peak. The vent itself is a low-profile plastic or mesh strip that runs the length of the roof peak. It’s simple, but when it fails, your whole attic ventilation system stops working, and your shingles pay the price.
Which GAF Models This Applies To
GAF makes two ridge vent lines we see most often in Jacksonville: the Cobra series (rigid plastic, 4-foot sections, low profile) and Snow Country (a taller profile designed for regions that get snow, though plenty of Florida homes have it from previous owners or spec’d roofs). The Cobra Ridge Vent is the most common on GAF Timberline and Royal Sovereign shingle systems. The 4-foot sections interlock, and the vent is sized by the attic’s net free area requirements, not by shingle type, so you need the right linear footage, not just the right brand.
Where we see compatibility problems: a homeowner replaces a section of ridge vent with a generic 4-foot roll from a big-box store, and that aftermarket piece has a different nail flange width or a narrower baffle opening than the GAF original. The result is uneven airflow and a ridge line that doesn’t seal cleanly against the shingle cap. For GAF roofs, we recommend staying with GAF vent sections or a direct equivalent that matches the original nail line. We can also install Owens Corning or CertainTeed venting where the existing roof system calls for it, but the GAF roof gets matched venting, not whatever’s left on the truck. One more thing to know: GAF’s warranty documentation for Timberline systems assumes properly installed attic ventilation, so the vent choice matters for your shingle warranty.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms won’t cool below 80°F in summer. A blocked or collapsed ridge vent traps superheated attic air, which radiates down through the ceiling insulation. In Jacksonville’s August heat, a working ridge vent should be pulling that hot air out continuously; when it stops, you feel it indoors within a day.
- Visible cracking or warping along the ridge line. Florida UV light is unkind to plastics. Cobra sections that sat in direct sun for 10-plus years can go brittle, split at the seams, or bow upward, opening gaps for rain to drive in during a coastal storm.
- Shingle granules collecting in gutters beneath the peak. When the ridge vent loses its seal, the cap shingles above it start to flutter and wear faster. Granules wash down, and the cap shingles go bald years before the rest of the roof.
- Water stains near interior ceilings at the roof peak. This is the one that brings us out to the San Marco and Riverside neighborhoods most often after a hard storm. Wind-driven rain enters through a cracked vent baffle or a separated section joint, and the telltale stain shows up on the ceiling below the ridge.
- Mold or mildew smell in the attic. A failing vent doesn’t just trap heat; it traps moisture. Jacksonville’s humidity seeps into the attic through the soffits, and without a functioning ridge exhaust, that moisture sits against the roof decking until it feeds mold.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical single-story Jacksonville home with 30 to 40 linear feet of ridge line, GAF ridge vent replacement runs between $450 and $850 installed. A two-story home with a steeper pitch or a longer ridge can push toward $950 to $1,100. The range comes down to how much of the existing vent needs cutting out, whether the cap shingles can be reused or need replacing, and whether we’re working around a chimney or a hip intersection.
You’ll get a written price in dollars before we start, and that price covers the vent sections, the fasteners, the cap shingles if needed, the labor, the clean-up, and the disposal of the old vent. No revisions, no “we found something else” calls mid-job. Erik Lindgren and the crew walk the roof with you before a single shingle is lifted, and the number on that quote is the number you pay. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the vent isn’t right a month or a season later, we come back and make it right, no invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
Some parts of this job are safe to look at yourself. You can stand in the attic with a flashlight and check whether the ridge vent baffle is cracked, pushed in, or blocked with blown-in insulation someone piled too high. You can also check from the ground with binoculars for visibly warped or separated sections along the peak.
But replacing ridge vent means working at the roof peak, on a ladder, handling cap shingles, and prying up roofing material without damaging the underlayment or leaving a nail-line leak. That’s a no-ladder zone for most homeowners, and in Florida’s heat, a 30-minute job on a hot roof turns into heat exhaustion faster than people expect. If you want to check it yourself and report back to us, we’ll walk you through what to look for on the phone. If you want it done and off your list, we bring the right sections, the right fasteners, and the right cleanup, and you keep both feet on the ground.
You’ll have the price in writing before we touch a shingle. Call (904) 604-7914 and we’ll schedule a free estimate to look at that ridge line.
FAQs
A properly installed GAF Cobra ridge vent typically lasts 12 to 18 years in Jacksonville, though the UV load here takes a few years off the plastic compared to northern climates. The cap shingles above it should be replaced at least once during that span, which is why many homeowners replace the vent and caps together.
In most cases, no. A cracked or warped section can sometimes be swapped individually if the rest of the run is sound, but once the plastic has gone brittle from Florida sun, more failures are coming. We’ll tell you honestly if a section-level repair is worth it after looking at the ridge. Call (904) 604-7914 to schedule an estimate.
Most GAF ridge vent replacements in Jacksonville take four to six hours for a typical single-story home. Two-story homes with steep pitches or long ridge lines can run a full day. You’ll know the schedule before we start.
We stock common 4-foot GAF Cobra sections on the truck, along with matching cap shingles and fasteners. If your roof uses the Snow Country profile or a specialty length, we source it from our Jacksonville supplier, usually within one business day.
