Owens Corning Flashing Replacement: The Jacksonville Owner’s Guide
If the flashing on your Owens Corning roof system is pulling away, corroding, or letting water behind your fascia, we replace it with Owens Corning-compatible metal and proper fasteners, typically between $350 and $900 installed for most Jacksonville single-family homes. We stock common profiles on the truck, so in many cases our crew can complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. You’ll have the price in writing before we touch a shingle.
Most Jacksonville homeowners discover the problem the same way: a brown stain spreading across the ceiling near a wall, a drip from the soffit during an afternoon downpour, or granules collecting at the base of a downspout. The flashing itself sits tucked under shingles and behind siding, so the failure stays hidden until water has already found its way in. By the time you see the interior stain, the metal has usually been compromised for months.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
Owens Corning flashing replacement spans the company’s full asphalt shingle line: Duration, Duration Storm, Oakridge, and the discontinued Berkshire and Woodcrest lines still found on older Jacksonville homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s. The flashing metal itself is not shingle-specific in most cases. What matters is the profile: L-flashing at sidewalls, step flashing at chimneys and dormers, valley metal, and drip edge at the eaves.
The compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: Owens Corning Duration shingles have a thicker dimensional profile than the older three-tab lines, which means step flashing that worked fine under a 1990s Oakridge roof may sit too proud under a new Duration install, creating a lip that catches wind-driven rain. The fix is cutting each step piece to match the shingle’s exposed height, usually 4 to 5 inches depending on roof pitch. We measure the existing shingle exposure on site before cutting any metal, because a quarter-inch misalignment is enough to create a leak path during a Jacksonville summer storm.
When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket: Owens Corning does not manufacture its own flashing metal. The metal comes from regional suppliers, and what matters in Florida is gauge and coating. We source 0.019-inch minimum gauge (most box-store flashing is 0.014), aluminum or G90 galvanized steel, with a mill finish or factory-painted color matched to the adjacent shingle and siding. We also work with GAF and CertainTeed systems, but the flashing spec remains the same regardless of shingle brand: heavier metal, correct bend profile, and fasteners compatible with the material to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Signs Your Owens Corning Flashing Replacement Is Failing
- Staining at the ceiling-wall junction: This is the classic. Step flashing behind a sidewall has backed away or rusted through, and water is running down the inside of the wall cavity before bleeding through the drywall. The shingles above the stained area usually look perfectly fine.
- Rust streaks or white corrosion on the metal itself: If you can see the flashing from the ground or a ladder, and it shows rust blooms or powdery white oxidation, the metal is in active decay. In Jacksonville’s salt-air environment, even galvanized flashing on homes within three miles of the St. Johns River or the Intracoastal fails noticeably faster than elsewhere in the county.
- Granule build-up in gutters directly below a valley: Valley flashings carry the heaviest water volume on the roof. When the valley metal shifts or the shingles over it begin breaking down, the evidence collects in the gutter below that specific valley, not spread evenly across the whole gutter run.
- Daylight visible through the soffit at the eaves: Drip edge is flashing too, and when it detaches or was never properly installed, you can sometimes spot gaps between the roof deck and the fascia from inside the attic. That gap lets wind-driven rain behind the gutter and into the roof edge.
- Lifted or curled shingle edges at a wall or chimney: Shingles don’t curl on their own in isolated spots. When you see lifting only where the roof meets a vertical surface, the flashing underneath has usually expanded, delaminated, or pulled free, forcing the shingle edge upward.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Jacksonville, most Owens Corning flashing replacements run $350 to $900 depending on how many linear feet need to be removed, how accessible the area is, and whether the existing flashing is nailed in place (common) or has been sealed under layers of old mastic (also common). A single 10-foot leaky sidewall might be at the low end. A full chimney re-flash with counter-flashing cut into the mortar joints runs toward the higher end.
What that price includes: removal and disposal of the old metal, new flashing cut to match the existing shingle exposure, proper fasteners compatible with the surrounding materials, fresh sealant at the transition points, and a written workmanship warranty. We walk the area with you before we start, show you what we found, and confirm the line-item price in writing. There are no change orders unless you ask for additional scope beyond what we both agreed to.

This is not a high-tension job like a garage door spring, but it is the single most dangerous place on any roof: the transition zone. Most flashing failures sit at edges, valleys, and sidewalls, which is exactly where ladder work, odd body positions, and soft decking concentrate. If you are comfortable on a ladder and want to do a visual check, that is reasonable. Look for visible rust, lifted shingle edges, and old cracked sealant. You’re gathering information, not fixing anything.
Where DIY goes wrong: removing old flashing without loosening the shingle course properly tears the shingle, and then you’re replacing shingles too. Fastening new metal with the wrong screw type (zinc-plated into aluminum, or drywall screws into anything) starts galvanic corrosion within a Florida rainy season. And most importantly, your repair is only as good as the seal at the top edge, which is buried under shingles you cannot fully inspect without pulling them. If the dog is inside and the kids are home, call us at (904) 604-7914. We’ll diagnose it, price it in writing, and leave the yard clean.
How Long Does Flashing Replacement Take?
Most single-area flashing replacements in Jacksonville take 2 to 4 hours, assuming the roof deck underneath is solid. If we find rotted decking where the leak sat, we’ll need to open the area and replace the damaged plywood before the new metal goes in, which can extend the job to a full day. You’ll know before we start, not after we open it.
FAQs
Quality aluminum or G90 galvanized flashing typically lasts 20 to 30 years in Jacksonville, though homes near salt water or heavy tree cover may see 15 to 20 years before the metal or the sealant fails. Call (904) 604-7914 and we’ll inspect your specific flashing and tell you what condition it’s in and how much life is left.
Sometimes yes, if the metal itself is sound and the leak is coming from old caulk or sealant at a transition point. But if the metal has rusted through, bent, or pulled free of the roof deck, caulk is a band-aid that will fail again, usually within one Jacksonville rainy season. We’ll show you the difference and price both options honestly.
We stock common aluminum and galvanized profiles in multiple gauges and colors on our trucks, along with the fasteners and sealants matched to each material. For larger or custom-bent profiles, our Jacksonville metal supplier runs same-day orders. We’ll confirm availability before scheduling the visit.
Only if you ask for additional scope. The price we confirm in writing before the work begins is the price you pay, unless we both agree in writing to add something. If we open the decking and find rot that was not visible from the outside, we’ll stop, show you, and give you a new written price before touching anything else.
